世界毀滅的時候，想一個人走在盡頭

昨天下午，收到了一封從獵人頭公司寄來的email
內容如下:

在台灣也許很難想像，但在英國...
投資銀行跟避險基金很喜歡找理工科的PhD
一來是理工科的PhD都具有分析大量數據的能力
再者是PhD的邏輯分析能力跟抗壓性都很高
這些特點正是他們所需要的
而且，如同信上最後所說，的確不需要財經相關背景
因為處理問題的不同，只有在model上有差異
但應用的統計方法都是相同的
統計的用途並不僅止於科學
舉凡是人類直覺難以判斷的問題，都可用統計方法加以解決
從與科學比較相關的參數估計、人工智慧的設計
到醫學上的症狀診斷，甚至是公共政策的決定
都可運用統計方法
從這些方面看起來...
投資銀行跟避險基金喜歡找理工科的PhD...
本來就是理所當然的事情

事實上，在英國很多理工科畢業的PhD從事財經相關工作
是不分科系的全民運動
就我所認識的，Aki，航太科學三年級，已經在投資銀行找好工作了
就等明年畢業
怡玎，統計系三年級，也是打算找投資銀行的工作
(她的論文題目很酷！是分析銀行發卡給不同族群的風險)

我以前是有收過一些投資銀行徵才的信，通常是透過系上的secretary
但指名道姓直接寄給我還是頭一遭
剛收到信的時候著實嚇了一跳
心想他們是怎麼知道有我這號人物？
怎麼知道我在幹些什麼？
(... in Astrophysics who have experience analyzing mass sets of real world data)
但後來想想，其實也沒什麼神奇的地方
因為我們的連絡方式，系所的網頁裡都找的到
而且，說實在的，每個Astrophysicist都得分析大量數據
反正，明天問同學有沒有收到相同的信就知道了

但我好奇的是...
究竟是哪個客戶委託他們找天文物理的畢業生？
他們指定要天文物理的畢業生，究竟是為了什麼？
呵呵，該不會要找我們去占星吧...
從星象看看明天股票會不會漲之類的...
否則，我也真的想不出別的非要天文物理畢業生的理由了...

其實，有點小心動呢...
畢竟一年五萬鎊的起薪，加上比薪水還多的獎金
若真的做了，寶貝的紅色法拉利絕對不是夢想！
不過我知道，寶貝妳不是這麼material對不對？
所以，就把機會讓給別人吧
我還是只對做研究有興趣啊，哈哈
